Flags all twirling in the air,
the bold, bright colors add some flair.
Our poles are shiny, black or white,
give a push, get some height.
Screaming numbers, counting out loud,
we love to make our high school proud.
But I remember my freshman year,
when tossing a single was my biggest fear.
When walking and spinning is tons of fun,
don't be surprised when asked to "strip and run!"
When band music begins to sound good,
and when you can hardly tell a tape-covered rifle is actually wood.
Inside my head, the show music repeats,
during school, after school, I tap my pencil to the beat.
I get so excited with a new season to start,

You've practiced all summer
and all week.
The lights are wicked bright
you set your beginning stance.
You pace your breathing;
steady slow breaths.
The music starts
as well as your counts.
You pray that you don't drop tonight
your not the one the crowd watches fumble to grab
your rifle, flag, or sabre.
You perform your heart out
with every step,
on every count you proceed.
Its the last set
you pull the flag
that has been hidden within the giant diamond.

You know You're In Guard If
You can catch anything thrown at you.
You know how to wrap your own bandages.
You have a flag callus on your right palm under your small finger.
You have permanent rifle bruises.
You can smiles genuinely on command.
You have an excuse for everything.
You know that "one more time" never means one more time.
You have more inside jokes than any of your other friends.
You catch yourself spinning your pencil in Algebra class.
Everyone knows that you are in guard by the t-shirts you wear.
You show up for everything at least 15 minutes early.
You know the perfect spot for a toss in your favorite songs.
When you wake up in the mornin

Colorguard is Easy? No way
We work in the freezing cold and blistering heat
We practice our asses off
We sit through every football game, even ones we don't perform in
Even when we could be out with our boyfriends
We get injured by our own flags
Or other elements
Yet we still march
Through the pain
We wear ridiculous uniforms
(at least in some cases)
And smile genuinely
Even when we don't want to
We memorize marching
Flag routines
music cues
AND Our places in songs
We don't complain
We give up part of our summer
To go to school every day for a week
For about 8 hours every day
We have heard the statement
"Colorguard is easy"
And we grit our teeth
